Ohio State has long been a center for atomic, molecular and optical physics (AMO physics). The research program in AMO goes beyond traditional spectroscopic studies, encompassing laser physics, ultrafast optical physics, laser-plasma processes, investigations of planetary atmospheres and the interstellar medium, optical cooling and trapping of atoms, network and quantum information sciences. Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics (AMO-PH) is interdisciplinary in its nature and covers a wide range of topics starting from foundations of quantum mechanics to astrochemistry and luminescence dating. This is the first of a two-semester subject sequence that provides the foundations for contemporary research in selected areas of atomic and optical physics. Topics covered include the interaction of radiation with atoms: resonance; absorption, stimulated and spontaneous emission; methods of resonance, dressed atom formalism, masers and lasers, cavity quantum electrodynamics; structure of simple atoms, behavior in very strong fields; fundamental tests: time reversal, parity violations, Bell

Other exciting areas in AMO physics are quantum optics; laser cooling and atom trapping; atom interferometers; the search for the electric dipole moment of the electron; the search for dark matter; studies of the consequences of Bose-Einstein condensation Atomic, Molecular and Optical (AMO) physics explores the interactions between atoms, molecules and light. Topics of intellectual emphasis within AMO range from the most fundamental questions in quantum mechanics to the study of emergent phenomena in many-body quantum systems. Progress in Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics is always linked to the progress and welfare of human civilization.
